An Inspired Breakfast

Happy weekend!

I have a gloriously lazy day planned today. My only plan for the day is to clear out the fridge and get some cooking done.

Unfortunately, I haven’t gotten started yet despite waking up bright and early at 7 am. My roommate doesn’t usually get up until noon or so on weekends and I try to respect that by staying out of the kitchen since her room is right next to it. In all honesty, it can be a little annoying when all I want to do is get up and at it, but it’s also nice to lounge around in bed all morning. I’m not minding at all today! :)

I don’t normally wake up hungry but today, I was starving the moment I opened my eyes! I’m always inspired by Lauren‘s gorgeous yogurt bowls and I have a ton of fresh fruit right now, so I put together my own.

In the bowl: half of a blueberry Chobani, blueberries, strawberries, homemade granola, a drizzle of peanut butter, and chia seeds. Yum! I think I’ll be recreating this one tomorrow.

Enjoy your day!

Bad News Bears

June 11, 2012 at 10:53 pm

I’m not often a victim of bad luck, but whenever I am, it seems to hits me pretty hard.

This past weekend was one of those times! On Saturday afternoon, I hit the gym with my new armband and my credit and debit cards in the cardholder (get where I’m going on?). After the gym, I went grocery shopping. I know I had both of my cards while I was at the checkout counter, but I couldn’t find my debit card when I got back to my apartment. Luckily, I live about three minutes from the grocery store so I just ran back out and retraced my steps… No luck though. I’m guessing someone found it and picked it up because I had to have gone back within the span of 10 minutes. I had to call the bank and get it replaced. :(

You know how I talked about getting my bloodwork done in my June goals post? Well, I’d gone and had it done last Monday and the results were waiting in my mailbox when I got back from my debit card-hunting trek. Sadly, more bad news. I’ve been plagued with genetic high cholesterol since I was in high school and I was really hoping it’d gone down in the past year since I’ve gotten a lot healthier, in terms of both my eating and exercise habits. But according to my bloodwork, it’s actually gone up slightly! Not significantly, but it was just very disappointing because that wasn’t the news I’d been hoping to get. There was some other bad news in there that I don’t really want to talk about… I need to call my doctor to talk about the results tomorrow and get some referrals for specialists. Boo.

And after all the bad news bears, I was totally drained and skipped my plan to write a post catching up on the week. But I’m trying my best not to make myself feel like I’m getting behind… S&R is my baby but it’s not my whole life!

Now let’s talk about the good stuff… Fooood! Here’s some of the stuff I’ve been enjoying lately:

A sample of chocolate/vanilla swirl frozen yogurt from my building’s cafeteria today. Topped with toasted coconut, yum! And how cool is this spoon?!

Vegan Divas’ chocolate mousse, which I discovered at my company’s cafeteria. Only 42 calories and absolutely delicious! Sadly, it’s a little pricey ($3.50) for an everyday snack so I may try making it at home to get my chocolate fix. :)

Veggie burger with soy provolone and roasted red pepper hummus on an Arnold sandwich thin. I just bought all of these things and they are all things I need to buy again soon. ;) It’s a tasty combination and a very quick meal!

Roasted pepper lentil chips with roasted red pepper hummus. Another awesome combination! I’m just loving this hummus lately.

And raspberries! They’re finally in season and I can’t get enough!

Peace out, Cub scout! ;)

A Motivated Monday

May 14, 2012 at 3:15 pm

For once, I don’t feel completely exhausted and dead on a Monday! Hooray!

I think it’s mostly because I’m taking Thursday and Friday off this week, making my workweek extra short. Just knowing that made getting up this morning much easier. :)

My crazy internal clock woke me up a little before 6 am, which I was ok with because it meant I had time for a morning workout before work. I’m finally starting to get used to the new sleep schedule my body has forced on me. Turns out I actually much prefer getting up early to go to the gym – it leaves me so much time in the evening to hang around and relax!

Anyway, I signed up for Bobbi’s Summer Shred a few days ago and today was the first day! I was super excited to find out what Bobbi had in store for us – it turned out to be a total buttkicker! She put together a circuit with various cardio and strength moves. There were some squats, planks, mountain climbers, burpees, and a lot of other good stuff in there! It took me around twenty minutes to get through the whole circuit and I repeated three times for an hour long workout.

Also, I’m now Instagram-obsessed so enjoy this photo of mismatched 10 pound dumbbells I used this morning:

And this is my “why are these planks so hard!?” face. This workout made it clear to me that while my legs and arms are in good shape, I really need to work on my core!

I also stumbled upon an article on Well + Good NYC today that proclaimed that “planks are the new crunches.” Interesting… One of the points they make is that crunches are similar to most people’s hunched over sitting posture and thus can do damage to your posture and spine. I sort of doubt that a few crunches will really do damage to my posture (which already has improved a lot from what it was a few years ago), but they do make a good point about people with desk jobs already sitting in that same position all day. I never thought about that. So hard as they are, more planks shall be done by me! :)

I loaded up on the fruit to fuel my body through the rest of the day. Raspberries, blackberries, honeydew, strawberries, clementines, and an unpictured half of a very overripe banana. It was almost baby food, but I ate it with a spoon anyway. Still tasted good!

Weekend Eats

May 13, 2012 at 3:03 pm

My Sunday has been pretty uneventful so far – just a lot of much-needed cleaning going on here! But I thought I’d share a few eats from yesterday and today.

After SELF Workout in the Park yesterday, I decided to go get a haircut in Chinatown. I figured I was already there, so why not? My favorite hair salon charges only $30 for a cut and blowout, a great deal in the city!

On my way, I bumped into a Yogo yogurt truck. Perfect timing since I was craving some froyo! I got a small fat-free tart with mochi and coconut on top. Mochi is my absolute favorite topping with froyo – I get it every single time! And if it’s a self-serve place, I may occasionally be guilty of getting more mochi than froyo… I said may. ;)

Anyway, back to my haircut! I asked for a one-inch trim and the stylish did exactly that, so I was happy with that. The blowout was amazing! But since I was coming from a sweaty workout in the park, completely unnecessary since I planned to hop in the shower as soon as I got home. Oh well. I snapped a photo in the elevator to share anyway!

When I got home, I had some grapes and finished up some leftovers from earlier in the week. I was still hungry though, so I decided to make some baked sweet potato fries. Good thing because my last sweet potato was on the verge of mold! I saved it though.

Breakfast

Breakfast this morning was an English muffin with peanut butter, strawberry jelly, ripe banana slices, and chia seeds sprinkled on top.

Lunch

After that, I hit the gym for some cardio and a Nike Training Club strength workout. I love that app so much! When I got home, I made myself a green monster smoothie, chilled in the fridge before I slurped it down.

And of course, Happy Mother’s Day to all the mamas out there. :) My family’s driving up around 6 tonight so we can have dinner at Komegashi Too in Newport. I love their sushi so I’m excited!
